Host: Are there medications that can treat obesity? Dr. William McCarthy: There are several medications that are available for the treatment of obesity. By prescription, the most common are Meredia which is Sibrutamine which works in Central Nervous System. Another medication is Orlistat which is a fat blocker. This is more commonly known as Ally which is available over the counter or Xenical which is available by prescription. There are also several older medications such as Phentermine which have been around for years and they have also been shown to be effective in weight loss. There are a number of other medications in these categories. Most of are very similar, most of them work on Central Nervous System.
