Host: What else is there?
Dr. William McCarthy: There are several other medications that are available. First of all, there are some medications that we actually use to treat other diseases. For example, there is a medication we use to treat seizures and migraine headaches which is highly effective in the treatment of obesity. There are several diabetic medications that we use for treating diabetes and that also is effective in obesity. So, we see drugs from other families that can be used for treating obesity and right now, we are studying these specifically for the treatment of obesity. There are over the counter drugs, there are herbal drugs. I don t recommend these, unless a person is under is medical supervision because they may have side effects and they may interact with other medications. There is a drug called Rimonabant which has been approved in Europe, which has been shown to be somewhat effective for obesity. The FDA has held up its application here in the United States until they get further clarification about side effects. We also have a number of drugs that are in the pipeline, that are being studied right now that maybe highly effective, that will attack obesity from different sources, from absorption to the Central Nervous System to changing behavior. There are even studies for vaccines that may work on some of the factors of obesity. In looking at medications for obesity there's not going to be one single answer because obesity is a multifactor disease and it's going to have to be approached in from multiple angles in order to be effective.
