Host: Should I give myself a reward if I keep my resolution?

Gary Ryan Blair: So should you give yourself a reward for achieving your resolution? One word, yes; absolutely, positively yes. Now, the question is what type of reward should you give yourself and why is it important? Let s do with the why first. Why it s important is you need as much compelling fuel as possible and knowing that there is an additional incentive and added incentive for you, that you re going to get something as a result of all of this hard work and perspiration and disappointment that you are enforcing, that s a good thing. Now, this reward should be something that s functional, something you are going to wear, something that you are going to use, something that s going to be visible, or has some type of a physical utilization that you can participate on a day-to-day basis, maybe it is a sweater, maybe it is a new pair of shoes, maybe it is a wallet, or a handbook, maybe a pair of earrings. It could be anything along those lines. You are going to be spending money, you are going to buy another blass; you are going to buy another tie; you are going to buy another suit. My advice is tie your purchases to your behavior. Just don't buy something that makes use because it s on sale. Buy something that makes use because you earned it. There is a whole lot of difference in terms of understanding and using your behavior as your buying criteria. That is the smart way to go about doing it. So, rewards are powerful, but you need to understand a psychological reasoning for it. So, a little more information that s probably in order here. Rewards are an extrinsic reminder of intrinsic behaviors. The reward is physical; it s something you put your hands on, you can see and for the world to see. It s what it symbolizes it s most important, and it symbolizes courage, boldness, conviction, decisiveness, follow-through, everything that s good and virtuous about society. Now, does that deserve a reward? Again, yes, absolutely positively.
