Host: How can I keep my lose weight resolution?

Gary Ryan Blair: In order for you to keep your lose weight resolution you need to deploy a number of different strategies, but a very important one and useful one you could apply immediately is the divide and conquer process. I believe, you take the larger resolution of, to say, losing 20 pounds within a given period of time, then you break it down into a series of smaller resolutions.

So, the same way that we would say on and off, black and white, this or that, what you do is you break this down into a series of smaller resolutions. I resolve to drink water instead of soda; I resolve to get up earlier at 6:00 rather than 7:00; I resolve to eat fruits and vegetables rather than sugar and Twinkies or something along those lines; I resolve to stop eating after 7:00 rather than after midnight; I resolve to do this. So what you want do is you want to take your behavior or everything that you are doing and look at all the things that have been preventing you and that s a good technique when I talk about preventive maintenances.

Sometimes, in order for us to achieve a resolution we have to look at the very things that prevent us from going there and it's not the negative, it's a very wise perspective. So you ask, what are all the things that would possibly prevent me from achieving the 20 pound weight loss. It's a very good question. Then what you do is you go about answering that question? Well, again it s the sugar, it s the late night; it s the sodas instead of water and everything else and you create a personal resolution against each individual one of those and as you look at those and put them together in totality, you got yourself a nice solid game plan. It s a real, smart way to approach it.
