Hi, I am Patsieann Misiti with the Alexandria Fire Department in Alexandria, Virginia. We are talking today about home heating safety. Now, let's talk a little bit about portable space heaters. They are several different kinds. We are going to talk about a couple today.

An electrical space heater for example should always bear the tag of an independent lab. Another type of portable heater is a kerosene heater. Those should be used only if they are in approved area. Make sure that you only use the type of fuel that was designed for a kerosene heater and never fill inside, always fill kerosene heaters outside.

For any portable heaters, make sure that they are never closer than at least three feet away from anything that can burn and never dry clothing or blankets on a portable space heater. Most importantly, always keep children and pets away from portable heaters.

Next, we are going to talk about carbon monoxide.
