Peggy Halliday: Public schools are required to provide a free and appropriate public education to every child no matter what their disability is. So, the public schools are required to provide your child beginning at age three in a couple of States including Virginia age two with a free public education that is appropriate for their needs. That means an education in which they can achieve the goals that have been written for them. So, different school interpret this differently but all schools are required to provide an appropriate education for your child, you may need to as their parent, you may need to advocate very strongly to get that appropriate education but it is your child s right.
