Host: What should parents do if they know they will be distracted while shopping?

Nancy McBride: If you are going to be distracted while you are shopping, my best advise to you as a parent or guardian is to find some alternate child care. Get somebody good that you trust, leave your children at home because this is a time of year when there are many distractions, there is all sorts of stimulation all over the mall, kids are distracted, you are distracted, they are looking at things, you are looking and it is very easy to get separated in a very crowded situation. So, think about that before you go and remember that it is never okay to leave your children alone, unsupervised, in let us say a toy store or any other kind of store, because if your expectation is that the store associates are going to watch out for your child, they are not. They are not trained to do it and they really do not have the experience or the time to watch out for your child and you want to make sure that your kids are not alone in that venue because again, if somebody is looking to try to gain access to a child, they are going to look for kids who are alone in a situation where they might be more easily approached. So, remember that when you go to the mall just because you are in an enclosed space, does not mean it is a safe place and you need to remember all the rules, you need to make sure your children are properly supervised at all times when they are out and about with you.
