Host: Does your body get healthier after you quit smoking?

Eletta Hansen: I think it will be helpful for you to log on to www.cancer.org and review the benefits of quitting smoking. Research does suggest that there are both short term and long term benefits to quitting smoking. Within just 24 hours of quitting, your risk of heart attack goes down, within five years, your risk of stroke has decreased to approximately half that of a nonsmoker, within ten years your risk of lung cancer is one-half that of a nonsmoker, and in 15 years your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as that of a nonsmoker. The unfortunate thing with the emphysema is that the lung tissue does not recover, the damage to the lung is irreversible, but quitting smoking does halt the disease and there is no further damage.
