Host: What if I just want to cut down on smoking or be a social smoker?

Eletta Hansen: It is very similar to what I just talked about; smoking is an all or none addiction. People who have smoked, their brains are primed for nicotine. Once you start to smoke again, even in small amounts as a social smoker, those receptors are reactivated. Stopping smoking means the receptors essentially go to sleep and over time the cravings will diminish. When you smoke, those receptors essentially wake up and it is very easy to return to being a chronic smoker and to feel comfortable with that. Again, please think of the addiction to smoking as an all or none.
