Host: How can more people be convinced to quit smoking?

Eletta Hansen: We have spent many years, educating patients about the risk of smoking and encouraging them to quit. Similarly to having people wear helmets at some point we have had to pass legislation. The two things that research has documented that really has helped people to quit smoking is the increase in tobacco taxes and, to enforce no smoking in more public buildings. A number of states have gone that route. In this particular area of the country, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC are now smoke free in all public buildings. We continue to educate, I am a firm believer that people with information will make the right choices and quit smoking.
