Host: What is the fourth commandment of goal setting?
Gary Ryan Blair: The fourth commandment is thou shall right down my goals and your mind is blessed with permanent memory, unfortunately is cursed with lousy recall and a great example is, just think about going to the supermarket with a mental list in your head. Because what most people think, Well, I don't need to write them down, I keep them in my head and what happens throughout the day, the phone rings, you get emails coming, there's -- visitors are coming your door, your office, whatever the case might be, there is a million and one different distractions that will take place and if you don't write it down, you are going to forget it, uUsually at the most inopportune times, but they go to the supermarket.
If you go down to the supermarket without a mental -- without a list, just in your head, somewhere between the green peas in the corner suppose, your brain is going to take a vacation and you are going to be scratching your head saying, What on earth did I forget, I was supposed to get something and that's exactly the point.
If you forget it on small things, I promise you, you are going to forget it on big things. So, it's important that we put it down and the real justification or the reasoning behind it is this, is it when you start to write on paper, you are forced to think and it is very much the same way, if we are going to look at architectural blue prints. When you look at blue prints, they are sketched out, it gives you a very clear idea as to where the outcome is going to be?
We should do that on every single thing that we said and the funny thing about life is more people will put their vacation plans down and what are they are going to do, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday? An old place that they're going to visit, and what their budget is and all of the sight seeing tours and they will check that off as go throughout and have a great vacation and when they come home, that whole discipline goes out of the window, and what's really most important as your day to day living.
