Host: What is the process for dealing with options and choices?

Gary Ryan Blair: So what is the process for dealing with options and choices? The key to is understand is that, do you want more choices or less choices. Most of us think that we want more, the reality is you want less. Now we live in a society where you can be have and do anything you want. So that goes hand in hand with unlimited opportunity, unlimited prosperity, I understand it but it's also a catch 22, here is the catch.

When you have more choices, when you have more options, what it does, it creates diffusion, it creates an inability to be decisive which is the number one leadership skill that everyone needs to develop. When there is more choices you become unsure of yourself. Let me give you an example, when I moved into my house in Florida, we had an option of tiles, we had an option of paints, we had an option of all types of decor and it was wonderful, even faucets for the sink and so forth. What got me, what really kind of got me was when they pulled out the carpet swatches and there were forty different variations of the color brown and tan and it got to point in time where we kept going back and my wife was indecisive and it drove me a little bit, a little bit bogged us from the stand point of one need to make a decision and get this house done.

What happened was is that as we were presented with more choices and more options with tile, with carpet, with paint swatches and so forth, it took us longer and longer and longer to make a decision. Now, I do believe that Henry Ford had it right when he said You could have the model T in any color you want as long as it is black. It doesn't take you very long to make a decision, real quick. So, what happens is is that we have more options, more choices, it takes longer for us to make a decision and then it creates diffusion and that's not a good thing, so you want to do everything you possibly can to remove as many choices and option as possible and that's why it is imperative that everyone determine exactly what your core strengths are. Focus on what you do well, remove everything else and get rid of all the other options and just pay attention to hard pay off activities.
