Host: Does competition help in maintaining focus?

Gary Ryan Blair: So does competition help in maintaining focus? Is it good, is it healthy to have competition? Absolutely without a doubt because your competition will force you to raise your game.

If you want to beat Tiger Woods, guess what you have to do? You have to raise your game. If you want to beat anyone on -- who is at the top of their game from a standpoint of basketball or karate or any sport or any business and it were to compete at there level what you need to do is raise your game, because the leaders in any industry are not going to lower their standards. You have to come up in order to beat them. Competition is good because it forces you dig deeper, to perform better, to intensify your focus.

Now examples, Coke needs Pepsi as very much as Pepsi needs Coke, why? Because they force each other to make the best possible product that they can. They force each other to keep their cost down because they are competing for the same shelf space, you and I benefit net result because of that. Nike needs Reebok for exactly the same reason. The Democrats need the Republicans for exactly the same reason.

You'll find this to be true for night needs day and the same way as you go through any type of competitive factor is you could look at automobile companies, you could look at anything. For years and every sales and marketing company I have gone into, I have always seen banners that says something like Friends don't let friends buy Xerox and you'll see that in the Canon showroom or something along those lines. One of the smartest things you can do is identify you enemy, identify the biggest competition and do everything you can to raise your game, to compete against them and that's a good thing because what you are going to do is as long as it's honorable and it's done for the right reasons, you are going to intensify you focus, you are going to add greater value, you are going to drive cost down and you are going to be much more healthy of an organization.
