Host: What happens to pregnant women going to prison?

Ed Bales: Well, women have different facilities than men obviously and they are well equipped to handle individuals who maybe pregnant, with child. If you are a pregnant women going to prison, I would suggest that you speak to your -- a prison consultant, or your defense attorney prior to going into prison and speak about what programs maybe available to assist you? What happens when the baby is born? All of these things should be taken into consideration well before you have to go into the prison system. Once an inmate has a baby, what happens is there is usually a period of time that the inmate can relax with the child and then the child is usually released to some type of family member or foster care.
