Host: What about cholesterol?

Kathy Reily: People with diabetes have an increased risk for having heart attack and stroke. Men with diabetes have about double the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke than a man without diabetes and women with diabetes have about four times the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke than a woman without diabetes.

So, it is very important to know your cholesterol numbers which include the LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and also the triglyceride numbers. In most people with diabetes these numbers are elevated and so many times medication will be needed in order to bring these numbers down to a target level. It's also important to eat a diet low in saturated fat, Trans fat in order to help assist with lowering the cholesterol level.
