Kathy Reily: Risk factors vary, but will include having a family history of diabetes, someone in the family, parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts or uncles. Other risk factors would include excess of weight, sedentary activity, having high blood pressure, having elevated cholesterol and triglycerides.
People of certain ethnic groups will have a much higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes. African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and Asian-Americans have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than Caucasians. Caucasians have the highest risk of type 1 diabetes and the highest risk is found in Scandinavia where we see more type 1.
