Host: What is an insulin pump?
Kathy Reily: An insulin pump is a device where there is a small reservoir of insulin inserted into a device about the size of a small pager. There is also a computer in this device and the reservoir of insulin is connected to an infusion set and that is inserted into the abdominal area. The insulin is delivered through this infusion set by the computer whenever that particular person is eating. It also delivers insulin on a constant rate for an hourly rate or a Basal Rate and the set is changed every 2-3 days and it eliminates the need for insulin injections with a syringe or an insulin pen.
