When there is a physical stress on the body such as having some surgery whether on an outpatient basis or inpatient basis, but just knowing at advance that illness or infection will increase blood sugar gives you some knowledge ahead of time. You can anticipate this and either perhaps have an adjustment in your medication, you might be able to get a little more exercise in, but knowing it will allow you to work with your physician and your healthcare team in managing during your illness.
