Chip Meyers: Hi! I am Chip Meyers, paramedic with the City of Alexandria Fire Department. Today, we are going to talk about some basic first aid skills that could help you save somebody else's life, such as splinting, controlling bleeding and what to do if a person is having a seizure. So, why don't we go in the classroom and get started.

Today's first aid skills, we are going to show you how to control bleeding in an arm and also a nose bleed and what to do if somebody goes in the shock. We are also going to talk about how to splint somebody's arm, a fractured arm, a fractured leg and an ankle injury and also what to do if somebody is having a seizure. Here is some of the equipment that we can use towards splints. If you don't have a board splints, you could also use a newspaper, a magazine or a small book. A swab is sort of a triangular bandage. If you don't have a triangular bandage, you can use other things around the house. You could use a handkerchief, a scarf, a bandana, roller gauge, anything you have. I have been in fire rescue service now almost 30 years. I am a National Registered Paramedic and I have helped in the lot of the area training programs.

So let's get started with how to control bleeding in an upper extremity.
