Host: If I market my book, what should the retail price be?
Jim Frey: The assignment of a retail price to a book is a joint decision by an author and a publisher, if an author is working with a publisher, which you can do if you plan to publish your own book and get it printed at a local printer and sell it yourself without engaging a publisher. I suggest, that you go into bookstores and look for similar type books to yours, be at the binding styles that we have touched on or the size of the book in terms of numbers of pages or the actual size physically of the book, whether it's a 51/2 x 81/2 book or an 81/2 x 11 book and see what other people are asking for these books and you establish what the retail price should be. If you are working with a publisher, the publisher will typically look at the prices for similar type books to yours in terms of size and content and give you a recommendation as the author on what the retail price of the book should be.
