Host: What similarities or differences may attract you to your partner? Gloria MacDonald: I think it's really important for you to take an honest look at what it is that attracts you to this person today. Is it things that you have in common, ways in which you are the same or is it differences? Now again, no two people are going to be exactly the same and we don't want a clone of ourselves or frankly, life would be really, really boring and we wouldn't continue to learn and grow, but if you are only attracted to that other person because of differences, because it's exciting and new and vibrant, those differences and that vibrancy and excitement will wear off and it will be eventually, replaced by friction, tension, irritation and challenges in a relationship. So give yourself a really honest questioning period if you will. Be tough on yourself and really ask yourself what is it. What are the personality traits? What are the characteristics? Sure you would say, "Well, the person is gorgeous and she is really attractive," or "he is really hot, but if you are planning on growing old together, we are not all going to look so hot and gorgeous and have phenomenal figures and no wrinkles when we are 65, 70 years old. So you really have to look way beyond just the physical attributes. The physical attributes are part of the relationship, but you -- I am really asking you to go well beyond that now into the core of who that other person is and ask yourself. What is it that you are attracted to? What are the values that you are attracted to? What are the personality traits that you are attracted to? What are the things that they do or the ways they do them, the ways they express themselves? What is it that attracts you to that person today? If it's all things that are different than what you are and the way you were raised, you might want to question that. You might want to think about how that's going to work for you in the long haul.
