Dr. John Schmitt: Hi, I am Dr. John Schmitt from the University of Virginia Health System and today I am going to talk to you about the first trimester of pregnancy.Host: Once a woman learns she is pregnant what is the first step? Dr. John Schmitt: Well, the first step I would think would be to tell their significant other that they might be pregnant because that would be an important thing to communicate. The next step is again, to try to remember when their last period was if they weren't keeping track that to help with dating the pregnancy and then make sure they are taking their vitamins because it's very important in early pregnancy just after conception to have the benefit of folic acid in terms of birth defect prevention. That said, I should then call their provider if they are unsure they she come in and get her confirmatory pregnancy test and then set up an appointment for prenatal care.
