Hi! My name is Robert Nassar from Dinner Done. Today, were talking about basic vegetable prep and now were going to show you how to peel and pit an avocado. Youre going to need a cutting board and a knife for it. You can also put a towel, a small towel or something similar to it underneath your cutting board so the cutting board doesnt move around so much on you. Lets talk a little bit about avocados. Most of the avocados sold here in the United States are the Hass avocados, these little small black skinned ones. You may see some larger ones in the store. What were going to do today is going to work just the same or those bigger ones over with the smaller black Hass avocados. To start youre going to lay your avocado on your cutting board. Take the knife and make a cut until you feel the pit of the avocado, but dont cut in too deep and then bring it around maintaining the same line until youve reached your starting point. At this point put your knife down, take both halves of the avocado and twist gently. There you have the pit in one half and no pit in the other. To get the pit out without struggling too much, take your knife and very carefully hit the pit until the knife sticks in it and twist to one side and there you have the pit. Carefully, take the seed off and with this you can do one or two things. If youre planning to make a guacamole or any type of sauce with your avocado and youre going to keep it in the fridge for a few hours, hang on to the pit. Once youre done making your dish, youre going to put the pit in with the guacamole, or salsa, or anything youre making to keep the avocados from turning brown or oxidizing. So, were going to set this guy off to the side for now. Next step as for peeling it, youve got two options. You can just take and start peeling the skin gently, see how it comes right off or if youd like you could use a spoon and come in underneath it and take the whole thing out, most of the time youre not going to really need to do that. Now, youve got your avocado half and now you can dice it or slice it, or do anything you want with it and that is how to peel and pit an avocado.
