Host: Should parents let potential employers know that they will need time off for things like children's doctor visits?

Dr. Diana Zuckerman: One of the hardest things to navigate for working parents is how much to tell your employer ahead of time of what you are going to need and sometimes it's very unpredictable. So, you might say to an employer I am going to need time to take my children for their well child visits or if they get sick and you might have a child that gets the flu frequently or you might have a child who never gets sick, but one of the things that we need to do as a society is to have workplace policies that are much more supportive to working parents. It really is not in anybody's best interest to have parents at work when they are worried about their child being sick or to have parents go to work when the parents are sick and run down from taking care of their sick child. So it's important for parents to be as open and honest as they can with their employers, but it's at least as important, if not more important for employers to be more sensitive to the fact that parents do have other responsibilities and that's part of life. That's an important part of life that we should respect.
