Host: What does Married Filing Jointly mean on a tax return?

Aurthur Auerbach: Married Filing Jointly, as I mentioned earlier is a marriage for federal purposes between a male and a female. They are married as of 31st December or prior, but at December 31 they are still married and generally speaking, they are still living together. There are some pretty strange rules - if a couple is married, but they live apart for the entire year or they live apart for the last six months of the year. So maybe there is no official decree of divorce or a separation. If the couple is just not getting along and they have decided to do a trial separation and not live together, depending upon how long they have not lived together will determine whether or not they can still file jointly. I remind you that filing jointly is the cheapest of all the rate tables.
