Host: How do I change my filing status from year to year?

Aurthur Auerbach: For Federal Tax purposes each year stands on it's own. So what you have filed as a filing status last year has no effect on this year. You make the choice based on the law. So you decide which filing status you are going to want so you could have done jointly with the spouse in, let's say 2005 and you separate during the year or divorce, so single would be or maybe your choice for 2007 or whatever two years are involved. So there is really here, every year stands by itself. You determine your filing status on a year by year basis based on the law and the rules in effect for that year.
