Jim Weiler: Hello. My name is Jim Weiler. I am the owner of the Piedmont School of Professional Massage, a professional massage training program, and clinic in the Greater Washington metropolitan area.
Myself, Ive been doing massage since 1985, and have been instructing massage therapy since 1995. Today, were here to teach you how to do a massage, and couple of key points. The whole secret, the whole trick to be able to do a massage without getting tired and needing to get a massage yourself, is to have a massage table on which to do the massage. The important point for the massage table is it, is at the right height, so that you can take advantage of your body weight, and what are called body mechanics to do the work for you. We have a massage table set up here and a good general guideline is to have the table come to either your fingertips or your first knuckle, obviously this table doesnt meet that requirement and this is only for demonstration purposes.
A couple of key stances that you will use in order to take advantage of your body weight and body mechanics is whats called the long bow and arrow stance or the archer stance, and if anyone out there, who has done Tai Chi might be able to relate to this as well as any other type of marshal arts, to where youre moving your body back and forth while keeping your back straight.
The other stance is the horse stance, which has the feet placed fairly wide apart, and you are able to go up and down from the knees and from the hips, rather than bending from the back or youre going to need a massage yourself. We probably all try to do massage at home on friends or family members on the floor or on the bed and found that we get tired after only a few minutes. The reason for that is, is when youre doing massage on the floor or on the bed, you are using the muscles in your arms and hands to do the work rather than using your body weight and body mechanics to do the work for you.
Today, well be demonstrating some basic Swedish massage techniques and how to incorporate those, and the body mechanics already demonstrated to do a massage for friends or family members at home.
