Steve Williams: I am Steve Williams with the National Driver Training Institute and we are learning how to pass the driving test. By form most of the tests that I have been on that have been failures were failures because the people did not obey traffic law. In this segment, I want to show you the laws that are most important to you on your test, to include stopping at stop signs and traffic lights, obeying the speed limit and making complete stops.
Four way stops make people nervous, because there are two rules instead of one. As you approach the stop see if anyone's there before you. The first person to arrive at the stop sign is the first person to go. When you approach a stop sign make sure you stop completely. You should stop before a white line in the road or before side walk and you should hold your stop for one full second. You should feel the vehicle rock back and be able to count 1001 before you inch forward to check for traffic and proceed when it's safe.
When you approach a school zone, pay attention to the speed limit. Pay extra attention looking for small children who might be waiting to cross the street. If you see a crosswalk you need to slow down and pay extra attention there people are waiting to cross the crosswalk you definitely need to stop. If you are not sure if people are waiting, you should stop to check it out. Construction zones like school zones require extra care. Be sure to slow down to the construction zone speed limit or slightly below. Show extra caution as you look left and right for highway workers.
Fines maybe doubled in construction zones depending on local laws, but a violation in a construction or school zone will cause you to fail your test. On the driving skills test, we are looking for you to maintain a constant and steady speed. Check your speedometer every three to five seconds, make sure that you are on target. Exceeding the speed limit by as little as three miles per hour in some states can cause you to fail. When coming down hill your speed is naturally going to increase because of the hill. So you need to apply your brake slightly to maintain a steady speed. When going uphill your speed is naturally going to decrease. So you need to apply a little extra gas. On next clip, I am going to show you some advanced maneuvers. I want to show you how to parallel park and how to properly conduct the three point U turn.
