I have owned reptiles, and lots of other pets, for many years. I got my first turtle when I was in elementary school. As a child I was deathly afraid of snakes, but that all changed about 15 years ago. Now I run the Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show (MARS) and the MARS Reptile & Amphibian Rescue.

Holli Friedland: I am Holli Friedland. I am Program Director of the Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show. We are talking about how to care for a Corn snake. In this segment, we are going to talk about, is a corn the right pet for you? When you purchase a snake and you should buy a snake either directly from the breeder or from a rescue and not from a pet store. Because that way you are buying the snake directly from the person who has bred it.

Corn snakes can live about 20 years. They get about five feet in length, you should know what you are getting into before you purchase your snake and a good way to do that is to get a book about snakes so that you can know what you are getting into before you buy it. Corn snakes make really good pets because they are very hearty and docile animals. They are easy for kids to handle and they are very good eaters which can be problem with a lot of pet reptiles. They are pretty easy to breed. So if you are interested in something that you can keep and breed, a corn snake might be a good choice for you.

In order to find out what sex they are, you need to have a sexing probe which should only be used by a person who is a professional, who knows how to use them. But basically, the tail on a male is longer and thicker than on a female. That's basically how you choose what kind of pet snake you want to get. Next, we will talk about the enclosure for the corn snake.
