Host: What are the trucks with the best gas mileage?

Dave Rizzo: For trucks, again some general considerations apply. Like I said before a small engine is better than, for gas mileage, than a bigger one, so go for the four cylinder. In fact all the top leaders have four cylinder engines. Also two wheel drive trucks get much better gas mileage than four wheel drive because the four wheel's have all that extra weight, greater rolling resistance, greater internal friction because you have got that two differentials, front and rear. So go for two wheel drive truck, four cylinder. At the top of that list is the Ford Ranger. You are talking about 21 city, 26 highway, that's not bad even for a car, Ford Ranger is the Number one. Second on the list is the Mazda B-2300 and here we are referring to the engine size 2.

3 liters, also pretty miserly. The Toyota Tacoma, a very popular truck with a wide range of engines but the four cylinder is very gas efficient, 20 city, 26 highway, not bad at all. Others rounding out, the top half dozen would be like a Nissan Frontier, a Chevy Colorado, you have also got the GMC Canyon, good efficient truck and if they still make them the Isuzu's, the I-290, you are looking at about 18 city, 24 highway.
