    Dr. Yolanda C. Holmes has been in private practice for 5 years.  Prior to completing her residency, she did research in both medical and cosmetic dermatology.  She is a Fellow of the American of Academy of Dermatology, a member of the Washington DC Dermatological Society and the Medical Society of DC.  She is on the attending staff of Howard University Hospital and the Washington Hospital Center.  Dr. Holmes is involved in community service by participating in health fairs, volunteering for community service events and being a mentor both formally and informally to area high school students.

    <p>Yolanda Holmes: Hello, I am Yolanda Holmes, a Board Certified Dermatologist. Today, we are going to talk about how to properly care for and protect your skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body. It is composed of three layers, the Epidermis, the Dermis and Subcutaneous Fat. The skin has many functions. It helps to regulate body temperature, it protects the skin, the body form microorganisms, it helps to regulate body fluids, it also is a site of the metabolism of important nutrients. The three layers of the skin include the epidermis, the dermis and subcutaneous fat. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. It is the site of pigment production or melanin and keratin which is responsible for the firmness and the rigidity of the skin. The second layer of the skin is the dermis. It is divided into the papillary dermis and the reticular dermis. The upper layer is the papillary dermis. The lower layer is the reticular dermis which contains blood vessels and nerves. The dermis is important for giving the skin elasticity and for collagen production. The third layer of the skin is subcutaneous fat. Subcutaneous fat is important in protecting the body against mechanical trauma. It also is a site of fat metabolism which is important in certain body functions. The three layers of the skin are the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous fat.</p><p>Now, let's talk about how to properly cleanse the skin. </p>
