Amy Stewart: Hello! I am Amy Stewart, and in this section we are going to talk about knowing what you want to grow in your container garden.
Basically, there is a couple of key points here that Id like to stress. First of all, less is more. A lot of beginning gardeners, myself included, long ago decided that I was going to have the biggest and best garden I could ever have, the whole thing became entirely unmanageable. So, there is no shame in just growing what you can use and there is actually a lot of pleasure to be gained from that.
Secondly, figure out what you already use in your kitchen. If you know that you live on basil in the summer time, if you know that you love rosemary, if you know that you will have chives, go ahead and grow those things and then there is always next year if you need to grow something else.
Today, I decided that were going to do an Italian garden, because I use a lot of the Italian herbs particularly in the summer time because they just taste so fresh and they are wonderful, and they love outdoor heat. So, the herbs that Ive chosen are parsley, rosemary, oregano, and basil, which are some of my favorites, and were going to grow those in the ceramic pot that weve already prepared.
The last thing that Ill stress you is some we have alluded to and that is that you want to make sure that your plants all kind of like about the same amount of light and about the same amount of moisture, and you can find those things out by researching them in a gardening book like a Rodels or something like that, which is like a gardening expert.
So, you can look up each plant and find out, and Ive already done the research on these to know that theyre all going to be really happy together.
That is how you select herbs for a container garden.
