Is there a penalty for guessing on a question on the CAT version of the GMAT?
Host: Is there a penalty for guessing on a question on the CAT version of the GMAT?
Jeff Glazer: Technically there is no penalty for guessing per se in the way that when you took the SAT tests, if you got a question wrong as opposed to leaving it blank there is actually an additional penalty inflicted but because it is adaptive and the contestant needs to know what you answer is before it can generate the next question; you actually not the given the option to leave a question blank, you must choose an answer no matter what so in that sense if you have no idea you have to guess; now if you get it wrong your score will go down and if you get it right your score will go up. The only real penalty inflicted is if you dont finish the test in which case any unanswered questions not only are they counted as wrong, there is also an additional penalty on top of that, that will bring down your score. So, if you are running low on time, test is about to run out, its best to just pick answers as fast as possibly can to make sure you answer everything even if they are wrong rather than let the test time run out on you.
