Margaret Morgan: This is Margaret Morgan, I am a science educator in Pinellas County, Florida and now we are going to talk about how to make your volcano erupt. Okay, so the first ingredient in your volcano is going to be your vinegar. So now I am going to pour in the vinegar, I am going to pour in about half of this bottle. Now the next thing we are going to add is gelatin that's going to make it a little bit chunkier, some nice chunky magma with some rocks in it. I am going to use this cone to help me pour it in there. Okay, the next thing we are going do is color our magma and again we are using Cherry Kool Aid to color our magma.

I am just going to go ahead and pour this in, I am going to get some nice red magma, maybe give it a little shake. Okay, the next ingredient is detergent, it is regular dish washing detergent, that we have some at home. And this is just going to give us some nice bubbly, foamy magma. You can put in a good amount of detergent to make it nice and bubbly. The next ingredient is our final ingredient, it is baking soda. This is going to complete the acid base reaction and this is what is going to make our volcano erupt. An acid is a proton donator and a base is a proton acceptor.

A strong base is going to steal protons. So basically what happens is you put in acid and the base together and the acid donates proton to the base and energy is released in the process. Alright, so I am just going to pour the baking soda in and then I am going to go ahead and give it a good shake. There you have an eruption still flowing down the mountain, got some nice gelatin chunks in there. This magma is not very viscous, it is traveling a long way before it cools. So as you can see it gets pretty messy, so you all are going to want to have paper towels around that can be a lot of clean-up. Okay, so this was one way of making a volcano erupt and next we are going to show you another method for making a volcano erupt.
