Dr. Russell Greenfield: It's summer time and you know what that means. Everyone will be spending plenty of time out in the sun. Today, I would like to discuss some ideas with you about being sun smart this summer with a special emphasis on how to protect your skin and eyes from the sun's damaging UV rays.
Here are my top five summer time health habits. Number one, avoid sun exposure at least between the hours of 10 A.
M. and 4 P.
M. when the sun's rays are the strongest. Two, make wearing sunscreen a morning ritual, just like brushing your teeth, since you never know when you might find yourself outdoors for an extended period of time. Apply sunblock or sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 everyday over all exposed areas and at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. Re-applying frequently on average every two hours. Number three, wear a white rimmed hat and sun protective clothing. Whereas, wearing a simple t-shirt provides little sun protection. Specialized clothing made using sun protective fabric and a very tight weave offers additional protection from the sun's damaging rays. Fourth, wear good sun glasses that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. And lastly, make sure your kids are following these guidelines too. Since most experts believe it's the sun exposure accumulated during our early years that plays the biggest role and risk for skin cancer, wrinkles and age spots.
One other thing, keep adequate hydration in mind. Start your day with a big glass of water and keep a clean supply of water nearby throughout the day so you can replace fluids loss during exercise and time in the sun. Summer should be a joyous time for the entire family and following the tips just outlined, can help make itself.
