Hi! My name is Chuck Will, PGA Director of Instruction for the Chuck Will Golf Academy. Now that we know how to hold the club correctly, we have got a good setup routine, we have been going through the backswing and downswing positions we are going to give you some practice exercises so that you can work on your own and make your golf swing even more, repeatable.
We talked a little bit about how your body rotates in the swing the best way to work on your body positions is with a mirror, with your arms crossed and take the golf club out of the equation. So I am going to get in my good golf posture, I am going to rotate my upper body over to the top of my back leg as my lower body resists. My downswing, I am going to unwind my lower body so I want to feel my belt buckle separate from my upper body, and unwind over my left side. You should feel your right shoulder move a little bit under your left as you go through, and then you finish on your straight left side. A common mistake on this drill is to let your head go forward, again let your lower body lean, your right shoulder will rotate underneath a little bit. We also talked about the swing plain or how the golf club shaft should swing throughout the swing.
What we use here at the golf academy is a very inexpensive, training aide that we have come up with. We just take a drive way reflector we put it in the end of the golf club it gives you a very inexpensive way to check your golf club through out the golf swing. And you remember on the setup, once we got set our take away, we went till waist high, so the club was right on our toe line. See at this point, that stick is going to be right on my left side, there are still in contact with my body. As I continue back, my right arm falls and the club sets, now that stick is going to be pointing a little bit out in front of the ball. If I have gone too vertical, that club is going to be pointing inside, not out on the correct plain angle there.
So as I go a little further back, now I just keep turning, now remember the correct downswing, my lower body leads, my arms come down, now the club comes back to the same angle as it was on the backswing. As I continue through, that shaft will point, a little bit out in front of the ball, till I get all the way down the waist high again. Now, that stick and the shaft are both parallel to my target line. As I turn through the impact, my hands will now definitely be ahead of the ball, which we want, and the stick is going to reinforce that. If I bring that club down incorrectly, its not going to swing very well, is it?
Now I am going to end up in a position like that. So its very easy to work in your swing with the stick. Make sure its on your left side, pointing a little bit out front of the ball, finish the back swing, lower the arms, turn through to a good impact position. Two on, range drills you could do actually striking the ball, go through your setup routine, and we are going to work on our waist high, to waist high drill. One thing that we are very big on here at the golf academy is that, your golf swing is symmetrical it matches up on both sides. It not only makes it more powerful, it makes it more consistent. So I am going to swing to my waist high position here, turn my hips through, finish in a waist high position on the forward swing. Again, waist high, the weight is shifting on my right side, turn through finish waist high on the follow through.
Our last drill, we are going to expand the backswing, we are going to go waist high, to what we call L position, where we check the shaft and our wrist are set. We are going to finish in the same L position on the other side. So again, my good setup routine, L to L. Good setup routine, if you want, check your L position, swing back to the L, turn through, and match it up on both sides. Your normal golf shot should have just a little bit of right to left curve for a right hander, because remember, your swing is a circle, and our club face is turning around the circle, rotating in sync with your body. Work on these four. These are very simple exercises; you will see a great improvement in your golf swing.
